Around 10,000 fundraisers participated in the BRMB Walkathon yesterday, already raising over £414,000 for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Individuals, friends and families braved the intense heat and occasional winds along the 26-mile route to raise funds to spearhead the refurbishment of the hospital’s dated emergency department.
Donning everything from sportswear and summer clothes to wildly crazy costumes, official walkers of the BRMB Lookers Vauxhall Walkathon provided onlookers with a vibrant human wave of colour along the city’s outer circle route.
Along with those who were brave enough to bare nearly all for a more au natural get-up, some came as superheroes including Batman, Robin, Catwoman and Green Lantern while others dressed as Oompa Loompas, Mickey Mouse, the Gingerbread Man or came as brides, scrubs staff, fairies, bumblebees and even as The A-Team’s BA Baracus!
With hundreds starting their route at 9am at either Kings Heath Park, Summerfield Park, Acocks Green Park or Brookvale Park – which all lie along the Number 11 bus route – many completed the full 26-mile course while others chose to do the half or a seven-mile family walk.
By the end of the day, the total raised had hit £414,845, breaking previous records for the walkathon. Additional donations continue to flood in, increasing the total so far.
