Midlands artist launches crowdfunding campaign to send her show to Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Following successful performances in London, Birmingham and Bristol; Wednesbury actor Danica Corns is calling on the local community to help her raise funds to take her debut show about abortion to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Developed by Wonderbox, a theatre company co-founded by Danica and run by women who produce, write and perform their own original work, A Womb of One’s Own is a topical production aiming to opening up discussions about abortion.

The fearless dark comedy follows university student ‘Babygirl’ as she encounters a journey of self and sexual discovery only to find out she is pregnant. As the story unfolds, Babygirl grapples with crotchety grandparents, unsympathetic hospital staff and new-found independence, in a show that claims it is “irreverent and laugh-out-loud funny, proving feminism isn’t po-faced”.

The play has received praise by Doctor Who and Withnail and I actor Paul McGann, who described it as “Skill and daring from a really promising young company”.

Wednesbury girl Danica, 23, explained:

“We have been overwhelmed by the response to the show so far with so many people coming up to us afterwards and sharing their experience or telling us how much they were touched by the play. Certainly for us this demonstrates a need for the show and that we really are helping to open up discussions about the subject.

“We want the show to continue with its success and taking it to the Edinburgh Fringe festival will give us the platform we need to put the show in front of theatre producers, directors and creatives from all over the world.”

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is one of the biggest celebration of arts and culture from around the globe and takes place every August for three weeks.

Wonderbox needs to fundraise around £8,000 in total to take the show to the prestigious festival and is aiming to crowd-fund £2,000 of that to contribute towards the costs which include accommodation, travel, theatre fees and marketing materials.
