Following their acclaimed sold-out tour earlier this month, indie rock band Gomez will be back in Birmingham this August to celebrate 20 years since the release of their Mercury Prize winning debut “Bring It On.”
Gomez is living proof that perseverance and consistency are qualities to be proud of; they have ridden out changes in fads and styles around them to maintain their popularity and critical standing.
Gomez beat heavy competition from Pulp’s “This Is Hardcore”, The Verve‘s “Urban Hymns”, and Massive Attack‘s “Mezzanine” to win the 1998 Mercury Music Prize, which has since been voted the favourite winner by BBC Radio 6 Music.
The five members of Gomez – Ben Ottewell (vocals, guitar), Tom Gray (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Paul Blackburn (bass, guitar), Olly Peacock (drums), and Ian Ball (vocals, guitar, harmonica) continue to receive praise in the rock press on both sides of the Atlantic.
“There’s something magical about ‘Bring It On’… something very special about anything you might do before you care what the world might think of you,” Gray noted about the band’s seminal debut album.
“It’s wilful musical adventurism: There’s a sense of escapism and experiment that could only be possible for wide-eyed kids. It will be a genuine thrill to share it with people again… I honestly can’t wait to feel 20 years younger on stage every night.”
The new UK dates follow a huge tour of the US and will include appearances at Victorious Festival in Portsmouth and Bingley Music Live, although Brummies can catch the band locally at the O2 Institute in Digbeth on Tuesday 28th August.
