Birmingham’s first Caribbean cookery school has been launched in the city.

Around 100 guests marked the unveiling of the Tan Rosie Foods Cookery School – the brain child of mother and daughter combo Lee Sylvester and Monica in which it is the first cookery school of its kind in the city.

The launch of Tan Rosie’s Cookery School included a tour of the new facilities in Witton, Birmingham

The event saw guests take a tour of the new facilities in Witton, sample some of the delights the school will be teaching budding chefs to cook, enjoyed a talk from the Tan Rosie team about the future of the cookery school; and were all lucky enough to be invited back for a complimentary cookery session.

Lee said: “Last night was such a great night, the support from family, friends, partner companies and the media was really overwhelming, it was an emotional night as the cookery school has been a dream for a good few years now and to see it finally launched really was a dream come true.

“It’s such an exciting time for Tan Rosie Foods and I cannot wait to welcome budding Caribbean cooks through our doors. We have already made bookings for a selection of courses running until the end of the year with lots of enquiries for next year’s sessions!”

The Cookery School comes after a successful eight years in business with Lee and Monica travelling the length and breadth of the country attending food and Caribbean shows spreading the love for the Tan Rosie products.

The Tan Rosie team has been selling their delicious range of homemade meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan friendly dishes as well as hampers, rubs, chutneys, cakes and fudge for all the family to enjoy since 2010.

It’s not just the foodie homeowner that enjoys the Tan Rosie products though, as several top celebrity chefs also order on a regular basis for their restaurants – especially the Tan Rosie range of mouth-watering pestos.

Who are Tan Rosie?

(L-R): Mother and daughter team Lee and Monica founded Tan Rosie Foods in 2010

Mother and daughter team Monica and Lee founded Tan Rosie Foods in 2010 creating tantalising Caribbean food, inspired by family recipes from Grenada in Carriacou and from Birmingham in the UK.

The name ‘Tan’ is an affectionate name for ‘Aunt’ in the Caribbean – Aunty, Tanty, Tan! ‘Rosie’ is Monica’s grandmother who inspired her to cook, she was known as ‘Tan Rosie’ throughout the family and beyond.

Monica is a seasoned cook with a strong Caribbean heritage. She started cooking from an early age in her home country of Carriacou. Since moving to England in the 1960’s she has always tried to mix Caribbean cooking with different cuisines.

“I love combining Caribbean flavours with my favourite foods. I try to bring a taste of ‘back home’ to everything I cook!”
