As results from the European elections trickle through from across the country and from Europe, it’s evident that the new Brexit Party appears to be making huge gains, becoming the largest single group representing Britain in the EU, while the Conservatives are suffering the most nationally.
Voting results are reflecting early polls, suggesting voters have punished the Tories for their handling of Brexit and have also sent a strong message to Labour for apparent indecisiveness; while the Green Party and the Lub Dems appear to be benefiting from taking a hard stance against Brexit.
In the West Midlands, these results are similarly echoed, with the Brexit Party taking the most votes in the region and second behind Labour in the city of Birmingham. Of the seven West Midlands candidates elected to the European Parliament, three are Brexit Party representatives. The remaining seats are split equally between Labour, Conservatives, Green Party and Lib Dems, who all have one seat each.
Early tallies are also suggesting that while Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party is on its way to taking the lion’s share of votes, the combined votes for the Green Party, the Lib Dems and Change UK could be far greater the those received by the Brexit Party, indicating the vote split on the left and centre-left giving Farage’s party a clear advantage. Votes directed towards UKIP, however, are thought to have deprived some ballots from the Brexit Party but not enough to harm their strong lead.
