Local residents have been left shocked as an ice cream van caught fire on a busy Smethwick street, with the flames then spreading to a local high street store.

With 20 firefighters currently tackling the blaze in Cape Hill, fire safety officials and asking members of the public to maintain a distance from the fire.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson confirmed they received a call about the incident at around noon today (August 13), alerting them to an ice cream van on fire.

Firefighters continue to tackle the blaze but are said to have it under control, despite it spreading to a nearby building, idenitifed as Jhoots Pharmacy.

Several local shops have been closed due to Eid al-Adha celebrations in the city, but a number of open businesses local to the scene of the fire have closed as a safety precaution.
