Tragic news is emerging as police divers attempted to retrieve a body in a canal near the Small Heath Bridge in the early hours of this morning.

West Midlands Police and West Midlands Fire Service, including ambulances, converged on Small Heath Bridge as police divers attempted to recover a body in the canal that runs beneath the bridge.

Police and emergency services were alerted at 7:43am and the area was quickly secured as specialist teams began preparations to take the body out of the canal.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:

“We were called to reports of a body in the canal at the junction of Small Heath Bridge with Montgomery Street in Sparkbrook this morning at 7.43am.

“We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the hazardous area response team.”

West Midlands Police are conducting an investigation and confirmed that passers-by alerted emergency services after spotting the body in the canal.

The body was later removed by the police and a cordon erected at the site as officers searched the location.
