George Galloway and Khalid Mahmood to join General Election hustings in Birmingham


Firebrand former Labour MP George Galloway and Perry Barr’s Khalid Mahmood are taking part in a hustings in Birmingham ahead of this month’s General Election.

The political heavyweights are taking part in a Q&A panel arranged by popular city broadcaster New Style Radio which will be chaired by Charmaine Burton, presenter of the ‘Different Anglez’ current affairs show on the station.

Also being attended by representatives from all of the main political parties, the public event is being held in Winson Green and will be aired live on New Style Radio 98.7FM.

According to organisers, the hustings will be an opportunity to “ask the questions you’ve always wanted to ask to the MP candidates on the panel. They will also be defending their party manifestos.”

Panellists are from various West Midlands constituencies with at least one representative from each main political party included in the line-up.

Former Labour and Respect MP George Galloway is standing as an independent candidate in West Bromwich East. Also standing in the constituency are Ibrahim Dogus (Labour), Andy Graham (Lib Dem), Christian Lucas (Brexit Party), Colin Rankine (Yeshua), Mark Redding (Green), Nicola Richards (Conservative).

Labour MP candidate Khalid Mahmood is standing for election in Birmingham Perry Barr. Also standing in the constituency are Thomas Braich (Yeshua), Kefentse Dennis (Green), Gerry Jerome (Lib Dem), Raaj Shamji (Conservative), Annette Wilcox (Brexit Party).

Three candidates standing in Birmingham Ladywood are joining the hustings panel. Lee Dargue (Lib Dem), Alexander Nettle (Green) and Mary Noone (Conservative). Also standing in the constituency are Andrew Garcarz (Brexit Party) and Shabana Mahmood (Labour).

Speaking to I Am Birmingham, host Charmaine Burton said:

It’s important that our listeners and the wider community have an opportunity to have their questions answered in this historic election. The people must understand that their voices been heard is paramount to our democratic process and our right.

“The key issues will be decided by the audience and listeners because they will be the ones asking the questions.”

The UK General Election takes place on Thursday 12th December.


The New Style Radio hustings takes place on Saturday 7th December at the Afro-Caribbean Millennium Centre, 339 Dudley Road, Winson Green, Birmingham, B18 4HB. Doors open: 1.30pm – starts 2pm sharp. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early as limited seating is available.
