Chief medical officer Chris Whitty self-isolates after testing positive for coronavirus

Professor Chris Whitty, the government’s senior advisor on health matters, has tested positive for coronavirus and is now self-isolating.

Boris Johnson’s chief medical officer Chris Whitty has confirmed he has tested positive for coronavirus. This news comes hot on the heels of prime minister Boris Johnson and health secretary Matt Hancock both confirming they are self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus.

Professor Whitty released a statement on Twitter in which he said:

“After experiencing symptoms compatible with COVID-19 last night, in line with the guidance, I will be self-isolating at home for the next seven days.

“I will be continuing to advise the government on the medical response to coronavirus, supported by my deputies.”

Professor Whitty has been a visible and vocal part of the prime minister’s coronavirus press briefings.
