Handsworth protest for George Floyd cancelled due to ‘security concerns’

A peaceful demonstration for George Floyd which was due to take place tonight in Handsworth has been cancelled at the last moment due to ‘security concerns’.

Cannon Street Memorial Baptist Church in Handsworth, Birmingham, was to have been the location for a planned protest which has now been cancelled. The event was designed to highlight injustice and police brutality towards people of colour.

A post was shared across social media platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp which detailed a peaceful protest to mark solidarity with African-American George Floyd, who tragically lost his life while in police custody in Minnesota.

The organiser of tonight’s demonstration, which was due to take place outside Cannon Street Church, released the following statement prior to the cancellation:

“To each and everyone out there please note there is a peaceful demonstration to take place in solidarity with George Floyd, who was brutally murdered in America last week.

“This will take place tonight, Monday 1st June 2020 at Cannon Street Church, 300 Soho Road, B21 9NA at 8:00pm.”

The statement stressed that the planned demonstration was to show solidarity and would have been of a peaceful nature:

“Please note this is a PEACEFUL demonstration.”

The organiser is calling for justice and unity, and added:

“For once and for all we want justice.

“Look how everyone is united in America in their disgust and horror at this murder, let’s show our support in a civilised way and get the message across.

“United we stand, divided we fall.”

However, the protest has now been cancelled until further notice and apologies issued to those who had shown interest in attending. According to the organiser the event was cancelled due to ‘security concerns’.
