A suspect who tried to escape arrest last night by running away in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham was discovered to be armed with a ‘Rambo’ style hunting knife when officers apprehended him.

The chase came to an end in a dramatic, and somewhat comical way, when the knifeman ran into a lamppost on Sunday night (30 November).

Bordesley Green has seen a rise of knife and gun violence amongst the youth in recent weeks, and some of the shocking incidents have taken place in public parks.

The Bordesley Green police team have stepped up patrols and have been monitoring activities involving guns and knives. A patrol through the area last night resulted in the dramatic arrest of a knifeman.

West Midlands Police confirmed the incident took place last night in Bordesley Green when officers on patrol spotted an individual acting in a suspicious manner.

The man panicked and ran away when officers approached him. This resulted in a chase along the road which ended in an unexpected manner according to the arresting officers.

Detectives said the knifeman ran into a lamppost which floored and disorientated the fleeing suspect.

Upon a search of the suspect a hunting knife was found concealed in the man’s waistband. The weapon was immediately seized by officers and the knifeman arrested and taken into custody for possession of an offensive weapon.

The knife recovered by officers was found to be similar in design to the one used in the ‘Rambo’ films.

A spokesperson for the West Midlands Police Operations Support Unit said: “Whilst on patrol tonight in Bordesley Green, U4B attempted to stop a male who decided to run away.

“Luckily for us he ran into a lamp post. He was found to have a rather large knife in his waistband.”
