No rubbish collections on Christmas Day for Birmingham, confirms city council

There will be no household waste collections carried out on Christmas Day (Friday 25 December), Birmingham City Council has confirmed.

Household waste from the festive period will only be picked up on the Bank Holiday (Monday 28 December) and New Year’s Day (Friday 1 January). No recycling will be collected on these two days.

The Christmas waste collections for households during December and January have been confirmed by Birmingham City Council, with those households who would normally have their waste collected on the above days now having their waste picked up as follows:

All other collections are scheduled as usual, council officials have confirmed.

Cllr John O’Shea, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Parks at Birmingham City Council, said: “This year, our crews have gone above and beyond to continue providing a service to the people of the city despite the coronavirus pandemic.

“They’ve again proven their dedication and loyalty to keep the streets clean through a willingness to continue providing services when many will be enjoying a rest from their own jobs.

“On the two Bank Holidays (December 28 and January 1), we won’t be able to provide the complete range of services we do for the rest of the year, but this plan enables us to do as much as we can with the resources available, whilst giving those team members who want a break some well-deserved time off.”

Council officials added that a reasonable amount of side waste will be picked up as part of the first post-Christmas household waste collection, as is usual during the festive period. This is usually around 2-3 sacks or black refuse bags of household waste.

On recycling bin day, any excess cardboard should be securely bundled with string and presented next to the bin for collection.

For those who do not wish to wait, the city’s network of five Household Recycling Centres will be open every day across the festive period, apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day – but all visits must be booked online in advance through Veolia, the council’s waste contractors.

The local authority also said residents should take their bins back onto their properties and present them on the next scheduled collection day if there is any adverse weather that affects collections on any day over Christmas and new year.
