Police warn public not to break lockdown to attend planned protest in Birmingham tomorrow

West Midlands Police have urged people not to attend a protest in Birmingham tomorrow while providing zero details as to what the protest is about, who is behind it or when and where it is even taking place.

In a vague statement issues earlier today, the force said: “We’re aware of a planned protest taking place in Birmingham tomorrow (Saturday 16 January).

“We are in the middle of another national lockdown and under these restrictions, leaving your house to attend a protest is not a viable exemption, so we are urging people not to attend.

“Our mission and purpose is clear – to encourage everyone to play their part, protect the NHS and ultimately save lives.”

While there have been several protests during previous lockdowns including social justice, climate change and COVID sceptics rallies, police remained tight-lipped about the weekend’s proceedings; suggesting officials may be using public platforms to reach out to individuals potentially attending a secretly organised event.

“We have a proportionate policing plan in place for the protest and will be using the 4 Es approach by engaging, explaining, encouraging and, where we need to enforcement.

“Coronavirus remains a deadly disease and there are national lockdown restrictions in place to prevent its spread. We continue to encourage people to comply with the regulations to keep everyone as safe as possible.”

Chief Superintendent Kim Madil, who is overseeing the undisclosed event, said: “We want to make it very clear that participating in the protest is an offence so we are asking people not to attend.

“If you do chose to attend the protest, expect us to engage with you. We will not hesitate to direct you to leave. We will also consider issuing fines or making arrests for people that continue to refuse to co-operate.

“We all need to play our part by staying at home.

“We know that the vast majority of people are following these restrictions and we would like to thank you for this. You are all helping to protect the NHS and save lives.”
