Police have confirmed a young mother of two found dead inside her home in Stetchford last week was killed by a 47-year-old man who later hanged himself at the scene.

Lucy Powell, 21, was found unresponsive at the house in Swancote Road, Stechford, last Thursday evening (27 January) by officers who forced entry following concerns raised by a family member.

A post mortem examination has now concluded the young mother was smothered and died at the scene.

Police also discovered the body of a man inside the house.

Gregory Duhamel, aged 47, died from hanging and police investigations have now concluded that he killed Lucy before taking his own life.

Chief Superintendent Mat Shaer, the Birmingham East Police Commander, said: “The post mortem examinations have confirmed our suspicions: this was a murder-suicide and no-one else was involved in the deaths.

“It’s a truly tragic case and my heart goes out to Lucy’s wider family, friends and of course her two young children.”

A police spokesperson confirmed that the force is not seeking anyone else in connection with the two deaths and the matter will now be referred to the coroner.

Lucy’s family – who have been left heartbroken – described her as “a kind, caring beautiful person inside and out” who “always put a smile on everyone’s face”.

The moving tribute to Lucy also praised her as a “loving mother” to her two young children.
