“Our streets are a war zone” says resident after shotgun attack in Bordesley Green

Local residents have been left terrified after a shocking drive-by shooting involving a shotgun in Bordesley Green Road on Thursday night (3 February).

The frightening drive-by shooting happened just after 6pm near a snooker hall by the junction of Cattell Road.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police confirmed that the busy Bordesley Green Road was sealed off between Cattell Road and Prince Albert Street following the shooting.

Specialist officers and forensics teams arrived at the scene and immediately began the task of scouring the area for vital evidence.

CCTV from local businesses was also collected by police and the material is due to be analysed to trace the perpetrators involved in the crime.

As violent crime increases in the local area a community volunteer from Small Heath highlighted the mounting fears and concerns of the community.

The local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, told I Am Birmingham: “This shooting comes only days after the horrific knife attack on a poor mother just up the road from here.

“Locals are terrified. We need regular police patrols around here. The Bordesley Green police station has closed down and is now a hostel, and armed drug dealers control the streets.

“Shootings and knife crime are now a part of daily life in Bordesley Green and Small Heath. Hardly a day goes by without something nasty happening involving a gun or knife.

“We can’t live like this. Our streets are a war zone. We’re barricaded inside our own homes. People have been hurt and killed and we’re not receiving any help from the authorities.

“We demand action from our dormant councillors who only come out at election time, and we want a visible police presence on the streets.”

Police are trying to reassure worried local residents by increasing the number of officers in the area over the next few days.
