Two teenage boys were stabbed in the city centre around 2.30pm today (Thursday 10 March) while shoppers looked on in horror.
Police confirmed that a number of youths had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the double stabbing.
Two scenes are being investigated, one at a fast food outlet in Corporation Street near Oasis, and the other around the corner on Priory Queensway. Six police squad cars and two ambulances were spotted at the scene of the stabbings which left witnesses in shock.
The two teenage victims were seen being carried off in stretchers by medical crews and rushed off to hospital for treatment for serious injuries.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “Crews arrived on scene to find a teenage boy who had sustained serious injuries. A second teenage boy was located nearby with serious injuries.
“The team of ambulance staff worked to administer trauma care to the teenagers on scene to stabilise their conditions. Both teenage boys were conveyed by land ambulance on blue lights to hospital for further emergency care.”
A police spokesperson said: “Emergency Section 60 powers have been implemented as a result of the incident.
“This power allows officers to stop and search people where there is evidence that serious violence has taken place or may take place.
“We remain concerned that young people are coming into the city with knives and that tensions could lead to other people getting hurt.
“Our priority is to protect and keep people safe.”
