Around 80 firefighters tackle supermarket blaze in Alum Rock Road, Birmingham

A massive crew of firefighters tackled a fiery inferno at a supermarket in the Saltley area of Birmingham on Bank Holiday Monday.

Around 80 firefighters battled to stop the blaze spreading from the store to a nearby primary school on Monday night.

The Zeenat Supermarket in Alum Rock Road, in the Saltley area of Birmingham, was the scene of the raging fire. The fire burned through the store and spread into the flats situated above the building.

Smoke and flames burst through the roof of the supermarket and could be seen for miles around.

West Midlands Fire Service deployed 19 fire crews to the hotspot shortly after 6:30pm on Monday (19 September).

The blaze was so intense that fire teams quickly began the task of preventing the fire from spreading to nearby Thornton Primary School.

Due to the threat posed by the fire the school announced that it would be closed until the danger had been completely eliminated.

Emergency services advised local residents to keep windows and doors closed. Motorists and sightseers were asked to avoid the area until the location had been made safe.

Access to several surrounding streets were closed off while fire crews worked at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said there were currently no reports of any injuries, and an investigation would be carried out to determine the cause of the fire.
