Residents demand action after man killed in Bordesley Green hit-and-run accident

Residents are calling for action after a pedestrian was killed last night in a shocking  hit-and-run tragedy in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham.

Police are appealing for information and witnesses following the fatality which took place after 11pm on Tuesday night (1 November).

The appalling incident happened near the junction of Heybarnes Road and Farmer Road, Bordesley Green.

A police spokesperson stated that a white hatchback-type vehicle struck a man in his 40s before driving off. Despite the best efforts of emergency services he was confirmed dead shortly afterwards.

West Midlands Police issued condolences to the family of the dead man saying: “Our thoughts are with his family and close friends and we’ll be offering them as much support as we can during this devastating time.”

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “A man has tragically lost his life and we’re in the process of establishing exactly what happened.

“I’d ask the driver to do the right thing and come forward to tell us, so we and this man’s family can understand fully what went on. They have been left heartbroken and it’s only right they get answers.”

Detectives are going door-to-door in the area with the aim of collecting CCTV footage. There is also an appeal for motorists to send in dash cam footage.

Local residents in the Small Heath and Bordesley Green area have raised concerns on a Facebook community page about local streets being used as race tracks at night. People are demanding action and asking for more police patrols in the area at night to prevent the reckless and dangerous driving.

A young mother who lives in Hob Moor Road – near the scene last night’s devastating accident – spoke to I Am Birmingham about the increase of speeding drivers at night.

She said: “The speeding started during lockdown when the roads were deserted, and the crazy drivers continued after Covid restrictions were lifted.

“The cars usually start racing after 10 at night and have very loud engines which wake up and terrify my kids. The bangs sound like someone firing a gun or something. Much louder than fireworks.

“Last night’s death is tragic and my prayers go out to the family of the man who lost his life.

“Sadly, it’s not the first time there’s been a hit-and-run. A teenager on his way to mosque was knocked over at a zebra-crossing in Green Lane one night, and there’s been a number of road closures in recent weeks after accidents in the area.

“These reckless drivers don’t care about pedestrians. Even cats aren’t safe. I’ve seen dead cats in the mornings when I take my kids to nursery. The poor pets get run over at night by these heartless drivers in their fancy speeding cars.

“The speeding cars are here every night in Hob Moor Road and Green Lane. Urgent action is needed.

“We need more police patrols in the area at night before another person is killed.”
