Two young men arrested over murder of Cody Fisher in Birmingham nightclub

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of footballer Cody Fisher who was stabbed to death at a nightclub in Birmingham on Boxing Day.

The two suspects were taken into police custody on Wednesday (28 December).

A 22-year-old was held at an address in Birmingham city centre just after midnight, while a second man aged 21 was arrested in London later in the morning.

They will be questioned on suspicion of the murder of Fisher, who was fatally stabbed on the dance floor of the Crane nightclub on Adderley Street just before midnight on Boxing Day.

DCI Ian Ingram, from the Homicide Team, said: “We’re making good progress in our investigation and are building a better picture of what happened.

“We’ve been really pleased with the response from the public and have already had a number of witness accounts and images sent through, which will help with our investigation.

“It’s vital that we hear from everybody who saw any part of what happened that night – no matter how insignificant they think it might be.

“Cody’s family and friends are devastated by what happened, and we’ll continue to work to bring them answers.”

Fisher played left back in local non-league football around Birmingham and also for Stratford Town and Stourbridge. One of the clubs where Fisher had previously played – Walsall Football Club – held a minute’s silence before the youth team training session started on Wednesday.

Tributes were also offered by Woodrow First School where Fisher coached the pupils. Fisher was described as a “bright, friendly, and talented young man” and his loss to the pupils and staff was “devastating”.

Nadhim Zahawi, MP for Stratford-on-Avon, said: “My thoughts and prayers are with Cody’s family.

“Those committing such mindless violence/crimes must be brought to justice.”
