‘We love you Cody Fisher’: Heartwarming tributes left for nightclub stabbing victim

Dozens of flowers and messages of sympathy for murder victim Cody Fisher have been left outside Crane nightclub in Digbeth, where the 23-year-old was reportedly fatally stabbed and killed on 26 December.

Knifed to death while “enjoying himself with friends”on the dance floor on Boxing Day, the local footballer and PE teacher’s life was tragically cut short after he was approached “by a group” of individuals at the venue in Adderley Street, and then stabbed at around 11.45pm, according to police, who reported Fisher had died of his injuries within 30 minutes of the attack.

News of Redditch-born Fisher’s death was met with an outpouring of messages expressing sadness and sympathy online from those who knew and supported him, including regional football clubs he had played with.

Outside the nightclub where he lost his life, family and friends have left flowers, letters and football shirts as a fitting tribute and to pay their respects to Fisher.

Among the numerous floral bouquets sit letters from individuals “devastated” by the news of Fisher’s passing, writing of how much they love the young man who will “always be in our hearts”.

Describing him as a “brother” and “friend”, messages have been marked with love hearts and affectionate ‘x’ kisses; as many mourn the loss of a talented and popular local sportsman.

In one letter, one of Fisher’s students refers to him as being his “favourite PE teacher,” noting “It won’t be the same without you and I will miss you very much.”

“All I know is that everyone who knows you loves you as much as I do,” the message continues, ending with “I hope you have a wonderful life above, may you rest in peace. God bless you.”

Cody Fisher was a regional football player, playing left back in local non-league football around Birmingham and also for Stratford Town and Stourbridge.

Following his death, the clubs shared messages of condolence on their social media pages alongside photographs of him, including in his team kit.

An orange Stratford Town FC shirt displaying the name “CODY” and the number “3” was also placed amongst the flowers outside Crane nightclub as a tribute to Fisher, along with a Bromsgrove Sporting FC shirt bearing the hand written messages “RIP Cody YNWA” and “Why?”.

In another letter, addressing Fisher lovingly as “Codes”, a friend wrote: “The amount of love for you everywhere just shows how much you mean to everyone.”

The letter continues, “You made sure everyone had a good time, you looked out for all of us and never stopped laughing or smiling.”

The author then makes reference to an enjoyable recent trip the friends made together to Manchester only last month, and reminisces about fun times at school, house parties, nights out, and Fisher leaving funny voice notes for his mates; thanking him for “his presence in it all.”

“Everyone’s fighting to get you justice for what happened,” the letter concludes. “I’m so sorry, you never deserved any of this.”

Expressing solidarity and support for his loved ones, the heartfelt message ends with “We’re all going to be there for all of your family and friends. Just like you looked out for us, we’ll look out for you.”

Cody Fisher tributes

In a statement published by the police, Cody Fisher’s family said: “They have broken our hearts; I have lost my best friend. My family and I are asking for privacy and respectfulness at this heart-breaking time.”

On social media, local football club Bromsgrove Sporting has honoured the memory of its former player, tweeting: “All of us at Bromsgrove Sporting Football Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Cody Fisher.

“Cody, was a friend to many at the club and we send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Football players for Birmingham City and Hull City also paid tribute by observing a minute’s silence for Fisher ahead of their Sky Bet Championship clash at St Andrew’s on Friday.

Investigation and arrests

Following an ongoing investigation into the death of Cody Fisher, two men have appeared in court charged with murdering the young footballer, while a 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder and four others arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have all been released on bail.

Kami Carpenter, 21, and Remy Gordon, 22, both from Birmingham, appeared at the city’s crown court on yesterday (Monday 3 January).

The two men were not asked to enter a plea to a charge of murder and were remanded in custody. However, they confirmed their personal details before pleading not guilty to a linked charge of affray.

Carpenter, of no fixed address, and Mr Gordon, of Cofton Park Drive, Birmingham, were remanded in custody following a four-minute hearing before two magistrates.

The Crane nightclub in Adderley Street, Digbeth, had its licence suspended for 28 days on Friday after police urged Birmingham City Council for an urgent review.
