Horror in Birmingham street as three teenagers shot during funeral wake

Three teenagers were shot and injured during a large funeral gathering in Hamstead Road, Birmingham, just after 6pm last night (Friday).

The shocking incident took place close to a school and church and police quickly closed off the road as an investigation was launched into the shootings.

Emergency services flooded the location of the shooting and a 19-year-old male was transferred to hospital to receive treatment for gunshot wounds while two other 19-year-old male victims of the shooting attended hospital separately.

A cordon is still in place at the scene today after detectives sealed off the area near St Mary’s Church Hall. A forensic search is being carried out and traffic is being rerouted.

A police spokesperson, said: “We’re investigating after shots were fired in Hamstead Road, Lozells, just after 6pm on Friday. Officers attended and a 19-year-old man was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital.”

Investigators have been speaking with witnesses and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area while extra police officers have been deployed in the area to reassure the shocked local community.

Detective Inspector Matt Underwood, from Force CID, said: “We understand incidents of this nature are shocking and we are thoroughly investigating all lines of enquiry.

“We have already spoken with a number of people who were at the scene but we would also urge anyone who can help further with our enquiries to get in touch.”

Police arrested an 18-year-old suspect on suspicion of possessing a knife following the incident last night.

As enquiries into the shooting continue, police are using Section 60 Powers in parts of Birmingham this evening.

These powers will be used in Handsworth Wood, Perry Barr, Lozells, Handsworth, Winson Green, Nechells, Aston, Winson Green and parts of the Jewellery Quarter.

The order gives police the power to stop and search people who officers suspect may be involved in violence involving weapons.
