Investigation launched after Birmingham man attacked and killed in Shard End

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was attacked and killed in the Shard End area of Birmingham.

50-year-old Darren Smith was found seriously injured after being attacked outside shops in Heath Way just after 2.50pm yesterday (15 March).

The victim was discovered with serious head injuries and tragically confirmed dead shortly after the attack.

The shocking incident, which took place in broad daylight, has left local people in deep shock.

A police spokesperson, said: “We understand he may have been the victim of robbery but we’re continuing to keep an open mind around the motive for the attack.

“A cordon remains in place today while we carry out extensive enquiries to establish who was responsible.

“We’ll have an increased policing presence in the area as we review all available CCTV and speak to as many people as possible to assist our investigation.”

The victim’s family have paid a heartfelt tribute to a “caring and loving son” and are appealing for witnesses who saw the attack to come forward.

In a tribute, his family said: “We as a family are devastated at the loss of our son Darren.

“He was a caring man and was loved by all who knew him. He was tragically taken from us and this has left a huge void in our lives.

“We would ask anyone who knows or saw anything please come forward and contact the police.

“We would now wish to be left alone so we can deal with our loss and grieve in private.”
