Major road closed and blue tent erected after serious crash near Birmingham Central Mosque

A part of a major travel route has been closed off to all traffic after a serious crash and a blue tent erected at the scene near Birmingham Central Mosque this afternoon.

Belgrave Middleway, in the Highgate area of the city, was closed off between Horton Square and Haden Circus after the collision at about 3:35pm on Tuesday (16 May).

The busy travel route was sealed off to all traffic by West Midlands Police as emergency services arrived at the scene and bystanders noticed a blue tent being erected at the scene of the crash.

A police spokesperson, said: “We’re currently dealing with a serious collision on Belgrave Middleway between the junctions of Horton Square and Haden Circus. The road is closed in both directions whilst investigations take place.

“We are urging witnesses and people who may have dashcam footage to contact us.”

The road where the crash took place is a major travel route that connects various areas of the city including Sparkhill, Edgbaston, Balsall Heath, Sparkbrook, Moseley, Kings Heath, Bordesley Green and Small Heath.

All traffic in the area, including buses, were diverted as officers carried out an investigation.

Bus operator National Express West Midlands issued and apology to passengers about delays to services that run near the location of the crash. Services 8A/C, 35, 45, 47 and 50 are expected to be running late.

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area as heavy congestion is expected around Sherlock Street, Highgate Road, Bristol Street and Lee Bank Middleway.
