Birmingham pedestrian killed in horrific hit-and-run, police hunt driver

Police are hunting the driver of a car who fled the scene after a pedestrian was struck down and killed in Birmingham on Saturday.

The fatal collision is believed to have taken place at around 2am (1 July) on Washwood Heath Road near the junction with Bennetts Road, say police.

The male victim of the hit-and-run was confirmed dead by paramedics at the scene just before 3am.

Police investigators are examining CCTV footage in the area and carrying out other enquiries to identify the car and the driver involved in the tragic hit-and-run.

Sergeant Stuart Edge, said: “I’d urged the driver of the vehicle which hit this pedestrian to do the right thing and come forward, before we come to arrest them.

“We’re working hard to understand exactly what happened, and would urge anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

West Midlands Police confirmed that operations are underway to make Birmingham roads safer after recent collisions and fatalities, including the death of cyclists, in the region due to speeding drivers.

Police patrols have been stepped up to stop residential streets being used as race tracks by dangerous drivers at night. Some of the drivers are reportedly driving while under the influence drinks, drugs and nitrous oxide.

A police spokesperson, said: “Road safety is a key issue for WMP; we know that by working together with local communities and partners we can make significant progress in creating safer roads.

“We are actively patrolling key areas to enforce speed limits and protect our communities from the dangers of excessive speed and other road harm issues.

“As the summer season approaches, we are intensifying our efforts and conducting more operations across the region.”
