RSPCA launch investigation after emaciated dead dog discovered on waste land in Birmingham

An investigation has been launched after an emaciated dead dog was found on Birmingham wasteland.

The RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is investigating after the body of an abnormally thin dog was found in bushes on derelict land in Birmingham. The dog was wearing a collar so is believed to be owned.

According to the society, a member of the public made the heartbreaking discovery on Saturday (20 January) off Woodend in Handsworth.

The dog, a tan bull-type breed, was in poor bodily condition, with all his bones visible.

The RSPCA has issued photographs of the deceased animal in a bid to help trace down its owners or find out more information. I Am Birmingham has chosen only to share a censored version of the dog’s body.

RSPCA inspector Jon Ratcliffe, who is investigating said: “We don’t know the dog’s cause of death but he was so emaciated, it is deeply concerning he was left to get in such a condition.”

The dog was microchipped however the contact details on the chip are unregistered.

Ratcliffe added: “The dog was wearing a collar so was owned, but it’s of great concern that they were so neglected. He weighed 23kg (51lb), whereas a healthy dog of this type should be around 35-40kg (77lb to 88lb).

“There is no CCTV nearby so we are relying on the public for help. We are eager to find out more information about this incident and we are urging anyone with information to get in touch with us.”
