Sex trafficking film Love Sonia gets UK cinematic release

An Indian film exploring child sex trafficking has been given a national release in the UK.

Love Sonia is inspired by real-life events surrounding the global sex trade and received a special preview screening in Birmingham last year, as part of the International Indian Film Festival.

The story focuses on the challenging journey of Sonia (Mrunal Thakur) trying to rescue her younger sister Preeti (Riya Sisodiya) from sex traffickers in the red light district of Mumbai.

The film also stars Richa Chadha (Gangs of Wasseypur), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) and Demi Moore. Tabrez Noorani makes his  directorial debut on the movie, it is produced by David Womark whose credits include The Life of Pi and Deepwater Horizon.

Love Sonia is a hard-hitting, harrowing film that succinctly highlights the untold story of young girls who are sexually trafficked internationally and their journey from innocence to desolation.

It follows the story of Sonia and Preeti as two sisters who are daughters of a desperately poor farmer in the desert-like outskirts of Mumbai.

After finding that her older sister Preeti has been sold to go to Mumbai to ‘work’, Sonia desperately attempts to find her sister, but is forced into the brutal world of sex work.

Their lives are at the hands of their abusers and Sonia finds herself being trafficked across the world in shipping containers and ends up in Los Angeles via Hong Kong.
