An appeal has been made for witnesses after a young man was assaulted and left lying unconscious with life-changing injuries.

Syed Anas Shah – known as Anas – has been in hospital for more than seven weeks after the “vicious” attack in Sparkbrook earlier this year.

The 22-year-old is now facing a future with life-changing injuries after being found unconscious in Swallow Close in Sparkbrook at about 2.40am on Monday 20 January.

According to West Midlands Police, “he had been subjected to a vicious assault – and we now believe that the attack had actually happened almost three hours earlier at around 11.40pm on the Sunday night.”

Anas suffered significant head injuries and remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

DC Sam Straw from force CID, said: “We understand the devastating impact this assault has had on Anas and his family and our investigations are very much ongoing.

“Our enquiries have been extensive but we still need people to come forward and tell us exactly what happened that night.

“We believe Anas was attacked about three hours before he was found injured in the street in the early hours of the following morning.

“For Anas and for his family, I would urge anyone who may have any information about this assault to please do the right thing and get in contact with us.”

Two men, aged 19 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of assault on 30 January. They were both conditionally bailed pending further enquiries.
