“Disgusting” racist yob assaults taxi driver and lollipop man before verbally abusing children outside nursery

A violent racist yob who racially abused members of the public including a Birmingham taxi driver and a lollipop man, before verbally attacking two police officers and children at a nursery, has been jailed for nearly three years.

The perpetrator was also reprimanded for smearing a police station holding cell with faeces after he was initially arrested. Daryl Jones, of Offenham Covert in Kings Norton, was apprehended by detectives last April after several members of the public reported him for his violent, threatening and racist behaviour. Police described his actions as “disgusting”.

Detectives confirmed Jones began his day of violent abuse when he and three of his friends were picked up at around 2pm in the afternoon on Wednesday 10 April 2019 by a taxi driver.

They promised the driver he would be paid at the end of the trip, but during the journey, to an address in Kings Norton, Jones demanded a phone charger from the driver and became abusive when he could not get it to fit into his phone.

The 33-year-old thug proceeded to racially abuse the Asian man and and told him he would “stab and kill him” if he did not drink from his can of beer. The Muslim driver was left traumatized by the verbal assault which quickly escalated as Jones began a violent attack.

The innocent taxi driver was hit in the face and punched in his eye, before Jones opened the windows and began swearing at passers-by as the car came to a stop.

He left the taxi with his group of friends, but forgot his glasses, phone, driving licence and bank card.

Unemployed Jones then went off on his own and assaulted a local lollipop man with his own sign on Haunch Lane, Kings Heath.

He was later reported by witnesses outside a nursery on Chamberlain Road where he was shouting racial insults at little children.

Not satisfied with his tirade of foul language towards innocent members of the public, he punched the windscreen of a Fiat 500 car on the same road causing it to shatter, before collapsing into a bush.

When officers came to arrest him, unrelenting Jones threatened to spit phlegm into one of their faces.

The raging thug was taken into police custody after a difficult car journey with him continuing to shout racist names at the officers and he finished off his day of violence by smearing his own faeces across the entire cell, which had to be professionally cleaned.

PC Amanda Winter from the CID team, said:

“Jones’ behaviour was completely unacceptable and quite frankly, downright disgusting.

“We welcome the sentence he has received and we wish to thank the numerous victims and the community for their resilience and bravery when confronting this man.”

At Birmingham Crown Court on Friday 17 April 2020, Jones was sentenced to 35 months in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of assault causing bodily harm, assault, racially aggravated assault and racially aggravated harassment.
