Teenagers arrested as mother pays tribute to son who was stabbed in Winson Green

A murder investigation is underway after a man was stabbed last Friday after reportedly “taking money from a Winson Green ATM” and walking into Summerfield Park where he was attacked.

Sohail Ali, aged 29, was stabbed multiple times in the chest and back at around 2:30pm in Summerfield Park, Dudley Road, on Friday (4 December).

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment, but he was tragically pronounced dead just after midnight on Saturday (5 December).

West Midlands Police have described the fatal stabbing as an “appalling” act of violence. Local people have been left shocked at the murder which took place in a public park in broad daylight.

An air ambulance was also scrambled to the scene on Friday afternoon as traffic built up near the scene of the stabbing.

The scene of the crime was sealed off as a police forensics team collected evidence.

A police spokesperson issued a statement that confirmed a post-mortem took place on Sunday (6 December) and the result showed Mr Ali died from “multiple force injuries”.

The shocking murder has left Mr Ali’s family in deep grief and and they are still trying to come to terms with their tragic loss.

Mr Ali’s mother paid tribute to her son: “My young, loving, kind-hearted son has been taken away from his family.

“This is the greatest loss.

“As a mother, I seek justice for my son Sohail and plead to any witnesses to come forward and contact the police.”

His family are continuing to be supported by specialist officers.

In a further note, released by members of Mr Ali’s family, there is a request for prayers.

“Sohail was taking money from an ATM and got attacked and stabbed around 2:30pm Friday, taken to hospital and passed away around 1am that night.

“Kind request to pray for the deceased and for the family.”

Detective Inspector Laura Harrison, who is leading the murder investigation, described the murder as “appalling” and has issued an appeal to the public for an CCTV, mobile or dashcam footage which might aid the murder investigation.

Investigating officers have also appealed to pedestrians and motorists, who may have witnessed the crime, to come forward.

Police have confirmed that several young people have been taken into custody in connection with the murder of Mr Ali.

Four boys and girl, all aged 17, were arrested over the past few days on suspicion of murder and all remain in police custody.
