Teenager arrested in connection with sexual assault against a child in Birmingham park

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault after a child was lured away from a playground in Rowheath Park, Birmingham, and attacked around midday yesterday (18th Sept).

The six-year-old girl was with her family in the playground when she was lured into a nearby wooded area and sexually assaulted.

The disturbing crime took place on Saturday afternoon in Rowheath Park which is within walking distance of Selly Oak Road. The perpetrator who carried out the shocking assault, in broad daylight in a public park, against an innocent child is described by police as “12-16-years-old with blonde hair and wearing a blue jacket and jeans”.

Police stated that the young victim told her mother about her disturbing ordeal on their way home and the crime was immediately reported and logged.

This afternoon police confirmed that a teenager was arrested in Birmingham in connection with a sexual assault against a minor and is now in custody for questioning.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “Our investigation is ongoing and we continue to support the little girl and her family. They have of course, been kept updated with this development.”

Police confirmed that extra officers were drafted into the area today and are speaking to local residents and people in the park as part of the investigation and to offer reassurance to local residents.

Discussing the arrest, Detective Inspector Matt Stone, from the Public Protection Unit, said: “This arrest is a significant development as our investigation continues at pace.

“I’d still urge anyone with any information, who hasn’t yet contacted us, to do as soon as possible.

The Inspector also warned against speculation about the sensitive case on social media: “There have been lots of comments on social media. I thank people for sharing our appeal, and those who got in touch with information.

“However, I’d ask that people do not speculate on the circumstances, its unhelpful to our investigation and distressing for those involved.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 20/749042/21.
