Horror as teenager stabbed to death in Small Heath

Police have launched a hunt for a knifeman after a teenager was stabbed to death in a busy Birmingham street on Friday night.

The horrific killing took place just before 5.30pm on Friday (10 December) in Coventry Road, Small Heath, and the crime scene sealed off to all traffic.

West Midlands Police Officers swiftly arrived to the scene of the appalling crime to support ambulance crews and preserve evidence, and immediately launched a hunt for the killer.

A police spokesperson confirmed the victim was a male aged 18 and specialist officers are assisting his family to deal with the traumatic news.

A section of Coventry Road between Green Lane and Watts Road was sealed off as police officers and forensics teams launched a major investigation. A long line of police vehicles were visible along that stretch of Coventry Road as officers conducted enquiries.

Detectives spoke to local residents and witnesses, and CCTV cameras of shops and flats in the area are also being scoured in the hunt for the killer.

The police spokesperson added: “This is a now a major crime scene and people should avoid Coventry Road between Jenkins Street and Watt’s Road.

“The cordoned off area will decrease as this fast moving investigation progresses but the road is likely to remain closed until tomorrow afternoon, so please be patient.”

Detective Superintendent Wendy Bailey, from Force CID, said: “I’d like to thank people in the area who gave first aid to the young man and I offer my condolences to his family and friends.

“A major investigation is underway to find the person responsible. A large number of officers are at the scene and in the area to establish the facts.

“If you saw that happened or have something captured on your dashcam, CCTV or doorbell camera, tell an officer at the scene or call us now on 101.”
