A busy area in the Moseley suburb of Birmingham has been closed off as eight fire crews battle a blaze at a four-storey building in St. Mary’s Row this evening.

The fire was reported shortly before 5pm on Monday (14 November) at the junction of Alcester Road and Salisbury Road.

West Midlands Fire Services arrived to the scene in “under 2 minutes” with eight fire engines and a crew of around 40 firefighters from five different stations to deal with the serious incident.

Police immediately put road closures in place as firefighters tackled the blaze at a building that contains residential flats and a cafe.

A spokesperson for the fire service advised people to avoid the area: “We have a number of appliances at an incident on Salisbury Road junction of St Mary’s row Moseley.

“There are road closures in place.

“Please avoid the area. ”

Fire crews are unable to confirm the extent of the fire at this stage and have asked local residents and businesses to keep windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering properties.

The serious blaze caused disruption to peak time traffic – including several key bus services, taxis and ambulances – and police have issued a request for motorists to find alternative routes tonight as firefighters battle the blaze.

The location is a major route between Birmingham city centre, Moseley, Balsall Heath and Kings Heath.
