Father pays tribute to schoolboy killed in electric scooter accident in Birmingham

The distraught father of the young schoolboy who tragically died following an accident while riding an electric scooter in Bordesley Green has issued a heartfelt tribute.

12-year-old Mustafa Nadeem lost his life on Tuesday (6 November) after a tragic accident near his school.

The young schoolboy, who had recently transferred from Washwood Heath Academy to Saltley Academy, was struck by a double decker bus while riding a Voi electric scooter just before 8am.

Mustafa lived in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham with his family. He was the second eldest after his sister and had two younger siblings, a sister and a brother.

Nadeem Khan, the father of the tragic victim, said the family had been left totally devastated and grief-stricken and their hearts had been torn to “pieces”.

Mr Khan described his son as “loving and warm” and added: “He was full of charm and always respectful, kind and considerate.

“His passing has broken all of our hearts into pieces. He was the kind of boy who would light up the whole room.”

The devastated family said they “cannot put into words” the level of pain they all feel after hearing about Mustafa’s shocking death.

Waqas Rashid, the uncle of the young victim, said: “We are all heartbroken.

“He was such an inquisitive child. He was a bubbly and happy boy.

“He was important to all of us and everyone is devastated. He was very close to his siblings who are all going to miss him so much.”

A spokesperson for the Trust that runs the Academy, said: “Washwood Heath Multi Academy Trust extends its deepest sympathy to the family of one of our young people, who was tragically killed in an accident on their way to school.

“We are supporting our young people and our staff at this time and are in contact with the family to support in whatever way we can.”

The grieving family of the victim have joined local voices calling for a ban on electric scooters following the loss of the much-loved schoolboy.

Cllr Shafique Shah – Deputy Lord Mayor and Councillor of the Heartlands ward where the fatal accident happened – is also demanding an electric scooter ban in Birmingham.
