Young Birmingham boy fights for life after horrific electric scooter crash

A young boy is today fighting for his life after his electric scooter collided with a car in the Balsall Heath area of Birmingham.

The horrific accident happened at the junction of Taunton Road and Stoney Lane at around 5:30am this morning (20 February).

Paramedic teams rushed to the scene of the accident and discovered the 16-year-old victim with “life-threatening” injuries.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson, said: “A teenage boy has sustained life-threatening injuries following a road traffic collision in Birmingham this morning. We were called to a collision involving a car and an electric scooter at the junction of Stoney Lane and Taunton Road at 5.30am.

“Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a trauma doctor and critical care paramedic attended the scene. Crews arrived to find the rider of the electric scooter, a teenage boy, with life threatening injuries.

“Ambulance staff administered advanced life support and advanced trauma care to him at the scene. He was conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with continued treatment from ambulance staff en-route.”

Police have launched an investigation into the shocking incident and taken a statement from the driver of the car which was involved in the collision.

Police confirmed that the driver did not require any medical treatment.

A police spokesperson, said: “We’re investigating a collision after a teenager was seriously hurt in Birmingham today.

“The rider of the e-scooter, a 16-year-old boy, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the car was spoken to by officers at the scene.

“The road was closed this morning, but has since been reopened as we continue to investigate the collision. We are appealing for any witnesses to come forward, they can call us on 101 quoting log 411 of 20 February.”

There has been a rise in collisions involving electric scooters and people have called for bans and online petitions have been organised to end the trial scheme in the West Midlands.

The shocking crash comes after the tragic death of 12-year-old schoolboy Mustafa Nadeem who died after his electric scooter collided with a double-decker bus in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham.

Following the death of Mustafa Nadeem, Deputy Lord Mayor Shafique Shah demanded an end to the electric scooter scheme which has already been banned in neighbouring Sandwell.

Cllr Shah, who represents the Heartlands ward, was deeply saddened and shocked by the appalling accident which took place in his ward last December.

Cllr Shah, said: “There is no good reason for continuing to operate the (WMCA) e-scooter scheme locally now.

“A little boy has lost his life. People are in despair.

“We need a complete ban now.”
