Police launch hunt for dangerous driver after mother and child struck by car in Birmingham

Police have launched a hunt for a driver who fled the scene after an accident which seriously injured a mother and child in Kings Heath this morning.

The poor victims were at a pedestrian crossing on the High Street near Asda when they were struck by a vehicle which then made off at around 8.50am.

The shocking accident happened during a busy period of the morning when parents were taking children to Kings Heath Primary School.

Mark Court, headteacher at the school, confirmed that the young boy injured in the hit-and-run was a pupil at the primary school.

The child was taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital with serious injuries, and the mother was quickly taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with head and leg injuries.

A blue BMW One Series, which is suspected of being involved in the collision, has since been found abandoned and police are carrying out immediate enquiries around the vehicle and who may have been involved.

A section of the High Street is currently closed as part of the police investigation.

A police spokesperson thanked motorists for their patience and appealed for any information that can help track the driver involved in the hit-and-run: “We’re asking for anyone with information to please contact us via Live Chat on our website, or by calling 101, and quote log 984 of 15 June.

“We’re keen to hear from anyone with dash cam footage.”

Parents and children who were at the scene of the accident have been left distressed and deeply disturbed by the incident and have demanded action to curb the rise of dangerous driving in the area.

Jaswinder, a 26-year-old mother who lives in Kings Heath, told I Am Birmingham that speeding has become a “norm” in the area: “It’s frightening what’s happening all over the city with these hit-and-run accidents. It’s becoming a norm. It’s no longer shocking.

“These crazy drivers think they’re on a speed track, in a movie or something, and they just don’t care at all about what’ll happen when they crash.

“Selfish and heartless. They don’t care. They really don’t. Some are high on drugs, others copy those stupid cartoony Fast and Furious films which don’t show the real danger of car crashes. People die in real life. Or they end up with life changing injuries.

“I hope the little boy and his mum who were injured this morning will be okay. What a horrible start to the summer for them.”
