A man has been charged after a woman in her 70s was knocked to the ground and robbed in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, police have reported.

A suspect was arrested shortly after the woman’s bag was snatched at the junction of Warstone Lane and Vyse Steet yesterday morning.

The 29-year-old from Hockley has now been charged with robbery and assault and was remanded to appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court today (30 April).

Members of the public helped detain the suspect after the woman’s bag was snatched at the junction of Warstone Lane and Vyse Lane.

It happened yesterday (29 April) at just after 11.20am and passers-by intervened before officers quickly arrived at the scene.

The woman currently remains in hospital for treatment, police confirmed.

“We managed to recover the stolen bag and the woman has been taken to hospital with a suspected fractured hip,” a police statement read.

“Tackling robbery is a priority for us and we launched Operation Ruby as part of our drive to catch suspects and reduce offences.

“We continue to have visible patrols in busy areas and, thanks to the brave actions of the public, we now have another suspect in custody.”
