Brummie photographer launches new exhibition exploring gender identity

A Birmingham photographer’s work exploring the city’s gender-bending culture is being exhibited at the Birmingham LGBT Centre, as part of their Pride programme of activities.

Birmingham artist Nick Hynan, who explores gender, identity and the LGBTQ+ community through his creative work, is launching the presentation to coincide with Birmingham Pride celebrations this weekend.

At a time when ideas about gender and sexual identity are seldom out of the media, Hynan’s Gender Blending 2019 aims to show that drag and cross-dressing is a living and evolving tradition.

According to the artist, “Today’s generation of drag kings and drag queens have developed a range of styles to challenge society’s attitudes to gender and sexuality with increasing confidence.”

The exhibitions features a range of ages, ethnicity and gender and has been an ongoing project since 2014.

Birmingham-based photographer Nick Hynan has worked closely with the city’s LGBT creative community to document drag kings, drag queens, club kids and performance artists at work and play in venues across the city.
