Legendary Fleetwood Mac singer Christine McVie from Smethwick dies aged 79

Tributes are pouring in for Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter Chrstine McVie who has died aged 79 after a short illness.

The British musician, who was raised in the Bearwood area of Smethwick, was a major force in the legendary music group Fleetwood Mac and wrote many of the group’s iconic songs.

McVie’s family issued a message saying she had passed away peacefully in hospital after a short battle with illness.

The heartbroken family said: “It is with a heavy heart we are informing you of Christine’s death.

“She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th 2022, following a short illness. She was in the company of her family.”

Her family, added: “We would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally”.

McVie, who studied at Moseley School of Art in Birmingham, went on to join Fleetwood Mac in the 1970’s and wrote some of the biggest-selling songs for the group such as Songbird, Everywhere, The Chain and Little Lies.

The band sold millions of records and became huge stars around the world.

In 1998 McVie, and other members of Fleetwood Mac, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Tributes have been pouring in for McVie after news of her death was announced by her family.

Fleetwood Mac issued a statement saying: “There are no words to describe our sadness at the passing of Christine McVie. She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure.

“She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life.

“We were so lucky to have a life with her. Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have.”

Fellow band member Stevie Nicks, added: “A few hours ago I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975, had passed away.

“I didn’t even know she was ill… until late Saturday night. I wanted to be in London, I wanted to get to London – but we were told to wait.

“So, since Saturday, one song has been swirling around my head, over and over and over. I thought I might possibly get to sing it to her, and so, I’m singing it to her now.

“I always knew I would need these words one day… It’s all I can do now.”

Band co-founder Mick Fleetwood, said: “This is a day where my dear sweet friend Christine McVie has taken to flight… and left us earthbound folks to listen with bated breath to the sounds of that song bird… reminding one and all that love is all around us to reach for and touch in this precious life that is gifted to us.

“Part of my heart has flown away today…I will miss everything about you Christine McVie.”
