An elderly man was struck down by a car in the Small Heath area of Birmingham last night (9 August).
Police have launched an investigation following the horrific collision between a car and the 65-year-old victim who is now in a critical condition in hospital.
Police were called to Somerville Road at the junction of Mansel Road at around 9.15pm and found the poor victim with serious injuries.
The elderly man received emergency medical care at the scene of the collision before ambulance crews transferred him to hospital.
A police spokesperson stated that the 18-year-old driver of a Toyota Aygo remained at the scene following the collision and is assisting with the investigation.
The junction where the accident took place was sealed off by police and all traffic diverted as officers assessed the scene.
Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing to anyone with any information – including dash-cam footage – to get in touch.
The accident in Small Heath comes only days after authorities launched a city wide crackdown on dangerous and antisocial drivers on Monday (7 August) which led to 23 motorists being apprehended and prosecuted within a matter of hours.
Local communities across the West Midlands region have been demanding action to curb dangerous driving which has resulted in collisions which have caused death and serious injuries. Children have lost lives in tragic traffic related incidents in recent weeks.
Mr Adeel, who lives in Somerville Road, told I Am Birmingham that he’s not surprised by last night’s collision and wants “more police patrols” to combat road safety issues in the area and the rise of young racers.
Mr Adeel, added: “My heartfelt prayers go out to the elderly gentleman who was hit by the car. So tragic and sad. He’s such a sweet man, always warm and smiling. A part of our community.
“There’s too youngsters racing day and night on local roads. These guys are totally out of control, and some of them are high as kites on nitrous oxide.
“Cats, dogs and people have been hit by these dangerous drivers, and the noise of the engines of their speeding cars is absolutely horrible, especially at night. Really scary.
“Let’s hope parents keep an eye on their children during the summer holidays. The streets and pavements are not safe.”
