Emergency services are carrying out a major search and rescue mission tonight in Kingshurst after people playing on a lake fell through the ice.

People reportedly fell through the ice at a lake in Babbs Mill Park shortly after 2:30pm today (11 December) and survivors are being rushed to hospital.

West Midlands Police have confirmed that some of the people who fell into the lake have been transferred to local hospitals in a critical condition.

Police cars, fire engines and ambulances are at the scene of the shocking incident which took place the popular nature reserve which has woodlands, a river, wildflower grasslands and a lake where the accident took place.

West Midlands Police and Fire Service are at the scene as the rescue mission continues with specialist water teams pulling out survivors and paramedics conducting emergency first aid before transferring the young people to hospital.

West Midlands Police issued a statement saying: “We are currently at the scene of a serious incident at Babbs Mill Park, Fordbridge Road, Kingshurst, Solihull.

“A number of people have been pulled from a lake and are being transported to hospital.

“They are believed to be in a critical condition. We are working with fire and rescue, and ambulance colleagues at the scene and will provide further updates in due course.

“The incident is believed to have taken place just before 4pm.”

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service, added: “We would ask people to allow emergency services at the scene to go about their work in a safe and effective way.”

“We will release further details when appropriate with our fellow blue-light partners.”

The incident took place as temperatures in the plummeted and many water features glazed over with a layer of ice. Emergency services are warning parents to talk to children about the dangers of frozen lakes, ponds, and canals during this season.
