A number of young men have been arrested – including two teenagers – after a robbery and disorder involving knives in Birmingham city centre. 

Five suspects were taken into police custody after a serious incident in Cherry Street on Wednesday night.

Shocked members of the public contacted police as a group of men armed with knives were spotted in the heart of  the city centre.

Within minutes of the 999 call at 7.55pm police flooded the area with armed officers and a specialist dog team to the location in Cherry Street to apprehend the suspects.

A police spokesperson, said: “We understood that as well as young men seen with knives, one person had been robbed of a bag.

“By 8.08pm we had arrested three people and a further two were detained by 10.20pm.”

Two teenagers aged 16, and three men, aged 20, 24 and 25, were arrested on suspicion of robbery and remain in custody as detectives investigate the serious incident.
